In the Viking village of Berk, 13-year-old Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is an awkward and bookish young boy who dreams of being accepted by his peers and respected by his father, Stoick the Vast. As part of a traditional Viking rite of passage, Hiccup must kill a dragon to prove his warrior mettle and earn his place among his comrades. However, things take a surprising turn when Hiccup befriends a wounded Night Fury dragon he names Toothless. Despite the fact that dragons are considered terrifying beasts by the Vikings, Hiccup is fascinated by Toothless's intelligence, agility, and loyalty. As they form an unlikely bond, Hiccup learns to see beyond his preconceptions about dragons and begins to understand their nature. Meanwhile, Stoick, a gruff but loving father, struggles with his own acceptance of Hiccup's fascination with the dragons. He sees it as a threat to traditional Viking values and fears that Hiccup will be ostracized by the community for showing sympathy towards the enemy. As Hiccup continues to secretly spend time with Toothless, he learns to ride and train him, discovering that the dragon is not only intelligent but also incredibly powerful.
